Common Storm Damage Problems After an Arizona Monsoon

You put in a walk outside after a monsoon and come across your yard strewn with branches. Or perhaps you have a tree that is leaning and you are concerned it could take out your car or home. What is one to look for in the Quad Cities once a storm has run its course?

Those are questions we hear often. A and C Tree Services, LLC is here to assist homeowners and businesses throughout the Quad Cities in the aftermath of each monsoon season. Should you require some help, pick up the phone at (928) 800-0452.

There is no denying the heavy rain and winds of an Arizona monsoon, not to mention the occasional hail. The desert may be grateful for the water but the trees can be left for the worse. We will outline a few of the problems that tend to show themselves when the skies put in an appearance again.

Broken and Hanging Branches

It does not take long to see broken branches after a monsoon. The wind will snap a limb from a tree or leave it hanging there. Then there is the widow-maker, a branch in suspense that is all too dangerous as it can let go in an instant.

After a storm, have a good look at your trees. You will want to give any that are cracked or loose a wide berth; they have a way of coming down unannounced and doing damage.

Uprooted or Leaning Trees

Monsoon rains soak the ground and the soil has little hold on the roots of a tree. Add in some wind and you can expect to find them uprooted or at an angle.

Take a tree that was upright before and is now tilting: that is a red flag. It may appear to be standing firm but the root system is likely compromised. In time a leaning tree will keep shifting until it goes over.

Split Trunks and Cracks

The force of the wind along with the heft of wet leaves can be hard on a trunk. You will see it in the form of a deep crack or split in the wood or at a major fork.

Once the monsoon is done, be on the lookout for:

  • Any vertical cracks in the trunk
  • Splits at the junction of two limbs
  • Bark that has come away from the wood
  • A tree that has taken to leaning
  • Soil lifted at the base and roots showing
  • Power lines with branches in them
  • New openings in the canopy

Debris and Blocked Access

A driveway or road can be made impassable by the debris and fallen limbs of a big storm. It is not merely an inconvenience, the stuff on the ground can conceal hazards and make it difficult to get about your property. For a commercial operation, a parking lot full of branches is bad for business and a liability.

Storm-Weakened Trees

Some damage is not so plain to see. A tree might put on a healthy front after a monsoon yet have internal problems in the trunk or roots that will see it fail the next time around. An inspection is prudent even if things seem in order; a professional will notice the stress most would overlook.

Why you should call in the professionals

One does not want to be cavalier about storm cleanup. To try and remove a hanging branch or tree without the proper equipment and know how is asking for trouble.
